Welcome to St. Charles, IL

St. Charles is located on the Fox River 34 miles west of Chicago, midway between Elgin and Aurora. It was founded in 1833 and incorporated in 1834 by Evan Shelby and William Franklin who laid claim to a tract of land after the Black Hawk War. Evan Shelby later brought his family and friends from Indiana to the beautiful Fox River Valley-the beginning of the settlement. The first town plot was recorded in 1835. The original post office was operated as Charleston, but was changed to SL Charles when it was discovered that a previous Charleston had been established in southern lllinois.

Today, St. Charles is an Illinois Certified City and has a population over 20,000. It has become an important retail and manufacturing center with over 518 acres of industrial sites within the city limits served by all utilities and city services, state highways, the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad, and 89 trucking firms. DuPage Airport is located adjacent to the city limits.

The St. Charles Municipal Building, built in 1940, is of beautiful Art Deco design and located on Main Street at the east bank of the Fox River. The Mayor/Council form of government determines Municipal policy and law. The city council meets on the first and third Mondays of each month. The current Mayor is Fred T. L. Norris.
